Hello, unfortunately I haven't updated in a loooong while, mainly cos I've been on holiday, and also, y'know, I can't be bothered and stuff.
Okay, well, I just got back from holiday yesterday, and have on the whole, been sleeping from about 6pm last night till a few hours ago. Waslking asround for 12 hours a day and vomiting at repeated intervals really take it out of you.
My flatmate pointed out to me that the first stories I told her were not about the authentic Czech experience I had, or the breath-taking architecture and amazing sights, but were in fact, not surprisingly, about the copious amounts of beer I drank and the crazy buggers that I came across.
So here is a 'quick' breakdown of the past few days:
Tuesday, arrived at about half 1, went to reception of apartments, after much confusion got checked in, dumped stuff there. Then we went for a walk, mainly because I was killing for a beer. Tried to find a famous beer hall, when we eventually got there, it was shite, so we ended up in this cool little gothic brewery, where we ordered 2 glasses of beer from a guy with a mullet perm. 1 litre glasses. When they do things in Prague, they really do them. So, we got drunk. Then we got lost. In a park. We lay down in the grass for a bit, and then proceded to take lots of photos of us in bushes, trees, etc. Then we got lost again. Then we found lots of good shops, buty they were all closed because it was late. dammit. So we went home, bought some food from the mini mart, and alcohol. When we got back to Wenceslas Square, there was a weird march going on, with protesters and police everywhere. After getting up so early for the flight, we just went to bed.
Just a note: We intended to drink at nights on the balcony, and also get up very early. But we didn't. So when I say we did those things, I lie.
We got up very early and had breakfast. Then we headed out to do a shopping day, which to be honest turned out to be more sightseeing than shopping, which was intended for the following day. We bought some stuff from the Prague version of Lush we spotted the night before, and then went to the Old Town district, and saw the Charles Bridge, and the astronomical clock. I particularly wanted to see the famous street on the South Side, which was the one thing I came here wanting to look at, but we couldn't find it. (The next day I found out we were right beside it the whole time.) We ate ice- cream. A lot. We headed over the bridge to the Jewish Quarter over Kampa Island and we saw a man who had some mice on a dog. We gave him money because it amused us. We went up the tower on the North Side to get a good view of the bridge, and I gave Claire an insight into the important pieces of history, but she didn't listen most of the time. Then we found a terrace bar next to bridge and sat there for about 3 hours and got a bit drunk on cocktails, and 80% shots. We both decided we loved the waiter and his spiky hair. After this we headed home, and we felt the need to sample the Czech cuisine, so off we went to KFC and McDonalds. We were going to drink on the balcony, but we were knackered, so we ended up drinking staropramen in bed while I pranced about wearing only pants with chocolate, which made for some amusing viewing by Claire I'm sure. Then Claire had a shower, and as there were no locks on the door, I took some cool photos ;) Later that night, I threw up, which was the beginning of things to come.
Up early again and we took sopme photos on the balcony with our new friend Gordon, and Claire put on her pashmina for all to see. We headed down to old town again, coming across a little market in the namesti, where there was a spaz cow, and me and Claire bought each other a rose. The we made an old woman take a photo who blatantly had no idea what she was doing. We headed further down to old town and came across the little theatre, where we bought a ticket for Cats, in black light form for that night. More walking, and we inadvertendly came across the Sex Machine Museum we were planning on going to. Lets just say there are some WEIRD people around. We finally got into the main square, took some photos of the Jan Hus monument, the Town Hall, the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, St. Nicolas, and the clock. After just having a conversation about how there were no altertnative shops anywhere, we found a lot in the space of half an hour or so. After walking around in circles for a loooong time, we ended up back at the terrace we had been previously, and had some food and beer. I ordered fish, even though I don't like it, which was not very sensible. Claire commented that I always order things I don't like, which, when I think about it, is very true, and I don't know why I do it..i just feel obliged to try the cuisine, and just new things in general. But anyway, after finishing the food and being screwed over by the staff, we left. We strolled home to drop off our souvenirs, and then headed down to see Cats.
Cats deserves its own paragraph. Basically, black light theatre is famous in Prague. It's where all the actors dress in black, so they cannot be seen, and UV light is projected on the stage, and objects in flourescent colours are used, so they can be seen. I wish I could have taken a photo. Had these people even seen Cats?! It was like Cats, in the same way that Reservoir Dogs is like Bambi, y'know, where all the characters and the plot are completely different. It occured ot me that you should really know the plot of the story before you go in to see one of these productions, and even though I've seen Cats twice, I couldn't tell you what happens. I fell asleep during the first show I saw of it, much to my mother's annoyance. Despite this, I'm pretty sure there is no Santa Claus in Cats, and at no point do they visit Egypt. Claire turned to me at one point to talk to me, and when I regained composure I realised I had actually been sitting staring at the stage with my mouth open. It was pure gold.
We left, and took photos of the theatre, and we met some people from Newcastle, who asked us to go for a drink with them. I won't say any more on that :S We headed off to take photos of the astronomical clock, and got ice cream. I took photos of the South street, and we wasted time until the hour, when the clock sounded. After that we sat on a bench near the Jan Hus monument until it got dark, and took some more photos. We went back to the pub we visited on the first day, and sat in the restaurant and drank beer. Claire had her photo taken with the waiter due to my insistence. We headed home, and then we left again to visit a club which we were given a leaflet to by a random guy earlier. Who we met again. Who then decided to personally take us to the club. Business must be bad. We got half way there, and decided to make our own way there. It was good, although I was feeling really ill, so I wasn't much company. After Claire finished her cocktail, we left, and went to bed.
We went home, I woke up, I threw up, I went to sleep, I woke up before 6, threw up, went to sleep while Claire went out, she got kidnapped by an American, and then we made our way to check out. While we were waiting for our taxi, we killed time and sat on a bench, where this guy came up to us and thought we were Czech.. then German. Finally her figured we were English and said hello, then left. Then he came back, in order to tell us he thought English girls were proud and pompous. Then he started having this massive debate with Claire about how God existed, and how we should have babies. It was more in depth and hilarious than that, but I'll tell you if you ask.
we then headed to the airport, narrowly avoided being killed by the taxi driver, and then we finally checked-in at the highly confusing Prague airport, where I tried not to die.
Plane journey home, then collapsed in bed.
There you go.,
In other news, I'm going back to the regional development agency I used to work for, ONE NorthEast, to do some coms work. Should be good. Unpaid, but good.
xxx
EDIT: you can go to Prague by yourself and just talk to randomers. I could have done it. I have so many stories I could tell you, but just ask me, they are class.
